Kabul, Afghanistan, December 7th, 2010: From inside the “Diamond” Ballroom atop the Safi Landmark Hotel, at the heart of Kabul, the Honorable Chairman of RANA Technologies, Mr. Abdul Ghafoor, in the graceful presence of Chief Guest, H.E. Engineer AmirZai Sangin, Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology of Afghanistan and the major media representatives, made the historic announcement. 

Currently the Internet penetration in Afghanistan is under 20%. With the implementation of this project by RANA Technologies, it will be extended to 80%.

Mr. Ghafoor, the Chairman of RANA Technologies, in his speech to the press, dignitaries and management of the company, emphasized the importance of effective Public-Private Partnership and attributed in major part the success of this historic achievement to the strategic vision and policy devised by H.E. Minster of Telecommunications and Information Technology where conditions have been created so that the telecom sector can flourish. Mr. Abdul Ghafoor added: “for a successful outcome, it is now even more crucial that such projects continue to be supported and facilitated by H.E. the Minister and Afghanistan’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA)”.

In his keynote speech, H.E., Engineer AmirZai Sangin, Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technologies praised the work of the executive management of RANA Technologies and its employees as an active member of telecom and ICT community for their major contribution in promotion and development of the Telecom sector and congratulated them for this major undertaking and initiative.

H.E. the Minister also pointed out the significant contribution the Telecom sector has made to the local economy by creating 100,000 good paying jobs, building human resources capacity and the important fact that most of the ICT companies are managed and ran by Afghans themselves.

Farhad Ghafoor, Executive Vice President of RANA Technologies, provided details of the plan and its schedule of implementation adding that the launching of the latest wireless Internet technology in his country of birth will keep Afghanistan if not ahead but at par with the rest of world’s developed countries. Farhad Ghafoor also mentioned that this project alone will add 1,000 more good paying jobs to the local Afghan economy.
